All I can say for the new game's protrayal of Uni is I'll judge it once I've played it, and same goes for any future entries. I could be disappointed in the end but I'm not going to make myself pre-disappointed.
I never did believe the little sisters would replace the main 4, so I wouldn't feel cheated that Uni didn't become ruler if Noire stayed in power. With Ciel replacing Noire, I'd need to know the specifics of how that happened before juding Noire for it.
Uni can be developed respectfully and have her needs met if this is written carefully.
Uni's development is to become more mature, more capable and trustworthy, but also to actually be trusted and esteemed by her sister. Part of that even in mk2 was getting esteem and meaning from other people, although Noire is still very important to her. I just want to point out that Uni's personal growth and satisfaction doesn't necessarily on being Noire's second in command while Noire is goddess. She may have really gained Noire's trust to the point she can be Ciel's main senpai instead of Noire. Maybe Noire even recognizes Uni's personality could make her a better teacher or advisor than Noire would be. Imagine if Noire also got mature enough to realize she doesnt always know best.
Even in my fantasy I imagine that she gets some respect and satisfaction from a relationship and a family, but that results in her getting closer with Noire too (not exclusive to Uni and Noire's relationship progressing naturally before that).
I would agree with you that all this as setting that happens off-screen before the main story starts is lame. I would like to see all that growth. But if that is a just-so setting, it might be nice to see Uni taking up a more responsible and autonomous position. Any progress after 11-12 years is going to be an improvement for me. Me being mad over the mishandling of Uni's arc was so long ago, and I got burned out if it. I'm not feeling the rage at this particular moment.
Now, if you can put yourself in the shoes of a Uni waifufag, I want to be hopeful for the new game because the promo text says Uni and Noire are collaborating now. Cautious optimism, but still.
It was the previous games that were really disappointing for Uni's character development and status. The series has generally been disrespectful to established character development even since the second and third games, but Uni had it really bad. She had a good arc in mk2 and the anime adaption. She gets a good status and confidence in the anime too, and it shows how she's good with kids too. Despite being short, the anime and mangas are still gold for Uni fans.
mk2 reset and changed stuff for the oringal 4, but at least we can give it somewhat of a pass as a reboot.
V really backslid Nepgear's maturity and her relationship with Neptune despite that she had good accomplishments in both games. I know you don't like Nepgear but I hope you'll agree with me that her character development shouldn't have been deleted after we see how tough she can be. But Uni barely appeared in this game, and when she did it was to get perved on by Iris. Like she didn't even get a full size character sprite for most of the game. Some of the RB3 post-game scenes with Uni were fun, but it was no replacement for a real arc.
The separate arcs in VII focused on the main characters for each country were a great idea. Uni and Noire arc was pretty nice. They strengthened their relationship, Noire built up more respect and trust for Uni, they got a little bit less awkward and able to show affection more. So long ago, that was already the last time Uni got a good arc. I should mention VII even had some continuity with good stuff from mk2 like her closer relationship with Kei. But Kei also never appeared after VII, so that hard-won esteem is lost like tears in rain.
There were some good individual Uni scenes in spinoffs, but again, none of them were satisfying arcs. Other than arguably 4GO, none of that was canon/main timeline either. And it was frustrating, after being almost excluded from V, Uni was entirely excluded from NOIRE's GAME of all things! Then from SNRPG, Hard Girls, Virtual Stars, Ninja Wars, and Riders!! You talk a lot about Blanc getting the shaft, but she's IN all the games. Your worries about her mattering are actual suffering of a Unifag, Romfag or Ramfag for years and years. Without fan works, there's hardly enough content for most people to maintain interest.
Think of how people felt when mk2 came out and the main 4 weren't there for just the first arc. At the time, it was much more uncertain which direction the series was going and there was so much less content that 'losing' an arc in just the second game seemed like a big deal. That's still the only good arc they have as a group, too. While the context is different, imagine that kind of feeling repeated like 7 times of the course of a decade.
BTW, In the fullness of time, Ch was vindicated for writing out the main goddesses to focus on the little sisters for one single arc was worth it both atistically and monetarily. mk2 was good. This has become such a big series, but that's still one of the most beloved arcs and defined many people's favorite characters.
On the other hand, the stupid shit the series has done SINCE then has been SO WASTEFUL of its potential. With the same number of spinoff games they have done a small-scale but real story focused on each main goddess, Nepgear, Uni, and Rom+Ram as a pair, and still had 2 more spinoffs left for Uzume, Ultradimension characters, and still another 2 more for random bullshit.
People were reluctant to wait a dozen hours through the candidate arc to see their waifus in the main 4 and I understand that, but all the random bullshit stories for the past 11 spinoffs were chosen over Uni's arc. At this point I only have myself to blame for caring. Logically there is no reason to expect anything good.
While I am heavily biased towards Uni, I thought she is popular enough that not including her is a baffling business decision to me, let alone Nepgear who has won #2 in some of the polls and still got left out.
It could even be worse, imagine if you're waifu was Chika, Financier or, goddess forbid, cursed spinoff-only character like Ester. Very rarely do you see someone keeping that up, but there was a guy who kept commissioning NISA art. I wonder if he still does that or still loves NISA.
Finally, when SvS was announced, I was so excited to for a main timeline game focused on the sisters. The PC version came out in 2023, at this point it's been 8 fucking years since the VII arc.
Surely all of the little sisters would get a good arc and relationship developement, right? Unfortunately, I was wrong about which sisters were versing which sisters.
While I do like some things about this game, I like Maho and Anri, it was so sad that Rom, Ram, and Uni were mostly just along for the ride.
The Uni and Noire conflict in this game was so unpleasant while adding nothing to the game's plot. It was not only unecessary but stupid, and I do mostly blame Noire. It was after this released that Noire started to be hated so much on nepgen. Not the main reason but sure didn't help.
I can make excuses for their behavior because they were stressed or whatever, but it's really not what anyone wanted to see. During VII, even the end of mk2, they should've been too good for that to happen. Even if they weren't, what was the point of treading the same ground again? Just so lame, so disappointing. That was a perfectly good moment to show how far they'd come, wasted.
At the same time, Uni wasn't really included enough with how Nepgear and Maho became close friends. Whether Uni would get along really well with them or help become friends in the first place, or if she would get petty and jealous in her own time of vulnerability, there were plenty of opportunities. Instead it just felt like Uni just became distant and stopped mattering after calming down. I guess the main story was convoluted enough.
Despite all that, SvS was important to me maintaining interest in the series in general. GMRE, Riders, Ninja, Virtual Stars, were not going to do that for me. As much as I liked Top Nep and Neptunia Shooter, those are like 2 hours of entertainment each.
GMRE yandere Nepgear for Uni was funny, but that was so short. At least in GMRE, she did get to be president of her own game company, but wasn't a great success.
After all this, I'm not worried Unlimited will treat Uni worse than SVS or V did. I can hardly concieve of that. I worry about the amount of content though. I haven't seen any CGs with Uni (I downloaded the zip but did not look through it). No idea how much story she will have.
