I'm more or less good with it, provided it doesn't permanently overtake the thread. My impression is that if a janny is too anal about threads rigidly staying on-topic, he risks killing the natural flow of conversation. Maybe a meta thread isn't a bad idea (I guess this doubles as a response to >>1238), but I'd rather not force all drifting conversations into there.
If you want something a little more on-topic, I'm surprised Exosapien Technologies hasn't come up yet. What those guys have been showing off for years is way ahead of Unitree's trash.

Heh, likely true.  :)  I've probably gone too far in this direction at times (but admittedly /robowaifu/ is quite a different type of board, with very long-running conversations going).

A combo with QTDDTOT is fairly standard fare for most boards, AFAICT.

It probably helps that like Mechnomancer, they design their mecha for a challenging situation instead of something that looks superficially impressive on a carefully controlled set. In Mechnomancer's case it's building mecha on a low-ish budget, whereas in theirs it's building mecha for offroading in the Canadian bush.

At the risk of namefagging... :D

Aye, I've mostly been trying build meks on a low budget, but my focus has been primarily on developing motor control systems... because nothing really exists for controlling 12V actuators at 48v with the level or precision or margin of error necessary: modifying standard servos only works up to 24v because the actuators get inertia at higher voltages which you need to compensate for when reading the joint encoders... nerd talk blah blah blah.

The actual shape of the mech has mostly been secondary.  Lean startups (and other constraints) drive & force innovation, because when you have a large budget there is a tendency to just throw money at the problem and hope that fixes it.

But I think I have the kinks worked out of the motor control system now (the low level logic takes a surprising amount of power), the right side of my mech is pretty much calibrated. Gotta calibrate the left side, assemble the two halves and dress it up.

Maybe next I'll build a smol exosapien or a bipedal mek.  With the system I've developed it opens a lot of opportunities for neat builds.  I can also see how far I can push actuators to drive big ol legs...

MotorSlice has at least one walking mech amidst its construction robot bosses, and a pretty huge one at that. It's a bit more dynamic to platform on than the prior bosses, as the limbs give it more exterior moving parts than the dumptruck or the helicopter. The problem is that, unfortunately, running up the thing and killing it is still a lot more trivial than a Shadow of the Colossus boss. You actually climb the latter, and cling on for dear life while the titan tries to shake you off, whereas here you just run up some geometry, do a bit of platforming, and zip around vulnerable orange patches with your chainsword. It isn't nearly as satisfying to take down, and you almost feel bad for the boss because it's helpless the moment you get a foothold.

Mechabellum is a halfway decent time waster if you like Multiplayer.  

Grendizer is a typical license game that follows the anime episode by episode. If you like Grendizer get the switch version.

Star Renegades looks like Active Time Battle the rogue like (i.e. lazily designed).

What are your favourite mecha pilot controls? Your least favourite? There's been a lot of variety over the decades, and it's always fun to see what mecha designers come up with.
On my end, it's gotta be the Escaflowne's setup. I've always been partial to anything that approximates pilot motion capture, and Escaflowne's controls are a sick, more visibly mechanical way of doing that than G Gundam strapping the pilot into a mocap suit.

For a slightly different take on the concept of the thread, what are some decent series that actually spends some time being about the pilot actually learning to control the damn thing?

I'm 14 episodes in to Danguard Ace, and I cannot recall a single other show I have watched where the pilot of the mecha has ever had to go through so much shit before he's even able to pilot the titular mech, and pilot it properly. In fact, you don't even see the thing properly transform until episode 11, and that was on accident. Every other series I can recall just skips over the training to where the pilot is already experienced, or just has the pilot "instantly" capable of controlling a giant robot.

That reminds me: if you've ever watched Armored Trooper Votoms, give Lupin III: The Mystery of Mamo a shot. Yoshikawa was the director and half of the screenwriting duo for that one, and in a weird way it's a kind of prototype for a couple ideas that he later perfects in Votoms.

What are some good examples of mecha and toku content made outside Japan? I know that mecha is generally considered an exclusively Japanese phenomenon because of its roots in animistic religion and World War II era myths like "samurai spirit". That said, a lot of Japanese pop culture is almost heavily influenced by western science fiction, especially stuff like Starship Troopers and the Blade Runner movie, so mecha is more like blend of different concepts than anything unique to Japan.

Every gundamfag I've talked to about it hates G-Witch with the fury of a thousand suns. Something to do with the setting being essentially cyberpunk (Anaheim in the UC comes close but otherwise unique in the franchise) but the series itself is like a high school slice of life with robots tacked on for most of its run. While it eventually does pick up from what I've heard the plot is still basically a string of woman moments until the MC gets gay married to the main rival at the end.

Man, does GQuuuuuuX feel like it needs another episode or two. The show has almost no breathing room after they leave the colony, and there's so much going on in the last episode that I want to rewatch it to take in a couple details better. The idea of some G-Witch newfag trying to watch this and getting completely lost because of how heavily it relies on UC callbacks and Evangelion crossreferences is pretty hilarious, but even if some of it is neat, this thing is a mess.

Looking further into this game's art and history while I've been trying to get the PC version working has been sadder than I expected. The guys who made Slave Zero crammed the game full of Eva Unit-inspired biomecha designs, but were forced by the publisher to make the player's mecha a really bland design which didn't fit the rest of the game's art direction. Most of the attention was pushed towards a gimped Dreamcast port, with the team not being allowed to further improve the PC version at all for several months before launch, and said PC version was unceremoniously shat out with almost no launch coverage to tell players it had come out at all.

As he said in the previous post's first and second images, the mecha designer was so badly burned by the experience that he decided he would never put his heart into his commercial work again. By the looks of it, he made good on that promise. Everything else in his portolio past Slave Zero is really obviously the work of someone who's just clocking in for a job.
It hurts. I get why he gave up after Slave Zero, but it still hurts.
