Can we lay aside all the bullshit symbolism and waifu slapfighting to talk about some Eva robots? Say what you will about this show, the plot was nonsensical and depressing and the characters were obnoxious, but man, if you wanted to watch a bunch of robots beat the living crap out of some space aliens, this show was the shit.

MP Eva looks like what a Joker mecha would like, I'm so glad at least this one was saved from rebuild god awful unnecessary redesigns.
>if you wanted to watch a bunch of robots beat the living crap out of some space aliens, this show was the shit
>"realistic" gritty battle>>>>>clean magic battle
I like fantasy as well, but it's much harder to plan well-choreographed battle in that style.

What's exactly wrong with Rebuilt designs? I know most of them are not exactly good, but I don't find anything special to complain about either.

IMO the biggest eyesore with those designs is the middle different color stripe in the torso; it's especially bad with Eva 01 having that too much striking neon green. Not only does it break the organic feel, but even worse it makes them look like a fucking sports shoe. In other words, it's very stupid and ugly looking.

Eva is the birth of true cash grab anime. Where you market waifus over content.

It wasn't always like that. If it hadn't taken off the way it did, that would have never happened.

>>572
It was always like that. Compare Eva's plot structure to something like Gundam. Gundams a war drama, Eva is a melodrama with a "war" back drop.
Replies: >>578
>>577
A melodrama intended to be a deconstruction, because Anno-san had the sadbrain.
Replies: >>579 >>647
>>578
You can make any excuses you want the point still stands. The focus shifts from the war to the melodrama. Amuro VS Char doesn't take over the show even though it's the core human element. Asuka and Shinji having break downs does and ultimately the background story is entirely centered on them to the point where Shinji personally decides the fate of the entire planet based on melodrama

Because it's not a traditional soap opera. Soap operas are social manipulation by TV channels. They're how you spread your message or ideals to middle age women who then pass them onto their kids and pressure each other with the latest message of the week. Soap operas are main stream propaganda, which Eva never was.

Eva sold you waifus. It straight up sold you a virtual pet Rei as an official product. From the very start Eva was about selling you characters to bond to rather than tell you a story. Completely different mentality.

Read that book if you want to understand more. It's about the otaku shift to become "data base animals" which explains the eva/Gundam change

I'm not sure I buy your spiel on soaps. But I certainly can get the idea that Otaku are as gullible and manipulable as "fans" over in Burgerland, to say nothing of how mentally deranged and emptily secularized they are.

Official government papers on how they use soap operas to manipulate. There's a UK department dedicated to it.

It's more that Otakus are looking for waifu traits over a good story.

Do you think you can't have media with multiple vectors manipulating you? FAG is literally waifu shit and trying to sell you mecha model kits at once. Anime isn't trying to sell you a story any more, it's trying to sell you a life style. Do you want to date the meek blue haired girl who will do anything you order or the angry red head who plays hard to get? This is the dynamic Eva brought to the table and you can see it ripple outwards in various series like Ruri in Nadesico.

The shift is feminine story telling VS masculine story telling. Masculine story telling is about 1 man surviving in a conflict bigger than he is. Stories like Sharp which use the hero as more of a vehicle for the setting and then add drama for an excuse for him to be there. It's about white base being in a conflict way over their heads and not knowing how to handle it but having to any way. Then you have stories like Eva and SEED which are entirely about personal feelings and relationships between people where the war setting is secondary. This is a feminine story and sits closer to stories like Twilight.

Women fucking love love triangles. They eat that shit up like men eat up titties. will Shinji pick Asuka, Rei or maybe even Misato!? Will Lucas pick Kira or Athrun!? These are the core elements of their stories and likely the reason why EoE ends with Asuka still alive. It's all worthless melodrama because otakus are so emotionally stunted and alienated from real people they act like women do.

>deconstruction
I hear this a lot but what exactly did Eva deconstruct? By the time it came along the mecha genre had already been deconstructed in almost every way possible. You could even go all the way back to the 70's and argue that Gundam 0079 was a deconstruction of super robo anime like Getter Robo and Mazinger Z.
Replies: >>652 >>674

I guess it was another knock on super robots, then.
But yeah, Gundam is pretty harsh on its own. Didn't Amuro figure out that the Zeon pilots hated and feared him by the end of the war?

Pacific Rim was made by someone who never watched NGE so you are just as bad as the normalniggers that make these comparisons, countless pieces of shit would say the movie was based on NGE well before the redub of NGE, despite the fact that the director never saw NGE and instead was into things like Gundam and Mazinger.
Pacific Rim 2 was absolute garbage.

Del Toro is a lying prick and the sooner you realize it the better. He denied any mecha influences at first, claiming it wasn't based on anything. Then came out and admitted half the designs are based on mecha he watched. There's no chance he hasn't seen eva.

>>673
I saw it at the cinema release day and hated it. It grew on me then circled back round to hate the moment I put a seconds thought into it (I also read the novel).

Pacific rim claims you need in sync brain waves to pilot jeagers. So the examples we see make no sense

>3 chink triplets
>2 brothers
>Father and son
All these are fine
>Husband and wife
Sketchy
>Random buck tooth midget and a white man
WTF? How does that make any sense?
>Nigger and a white woman
WTF again

I'll let it off on nigger and son because they make an excuse for it. But these combinations make absolutely no sense to even the slightest education in biology. You're not going to sync male and female brains and definitely not across races.

Then you have the false advertising which ruined the movie when I went to see it. Here's all the cool robots and oh no they're dead immediately. It's like signing up to watch 00 and the only robots you ever see are Exia and Dynames and everything else gets Methussed out the gate.

Kaiju movies are really hard to do well. And pacific rim is a prime example of it being done poorly but presented well. It's the Call of duty style which will create lots of fanboys who don't care how shallow it is because it's been polished up well.

>>647
Eva deconstructed anime as a medium. Instead of selling you toys of robots or music CDs it started selling you character arch types. You're not buying Rei Ayanami you're buying the submissive pale girl. Eva is the first step into the data base style anime character where otakus watch anime based on character check lists instead of story or world. It's difficult to understand through a western lens because we're trying to understand why the show is the way it is. Eva's influence is on the production and "community" around it. Eva is a deconstruction of mecha the same way Star wars is a deconstruction of classic science fiction stories. Instead of neat little serials you watch on the cinema it becomes a huge industry that sells kids IOUs in place of action figures for Christmas. You wouldn't have the slice of life crap or even the Wing/SEED boy bands without Eva's deconstruction of the industry into database fanboys
>>408 (OP)
>the plot was nonsensical
How?
>>464
That is a selling point of the show.

The point of NGE backfired when Anno didn't consider that making such a compelling show would make the otaku rabbit hole deeper so he decided to embrace it and make money off of it.

As bad as it is, Rei and Asuka were never treated as throwaway fanservice trash that every anime and waifu over the last decade is.
