I ordered a PS Vita (my PC is a toaster and I don't have other consoles) and I'd be interested in checking out this series by starting with Re;Birth 1, but I'd first like to get to know some things in advance.
-What's the ratio of story/gameplay?
-Is the gameplay engaging and challenging?
-Are there branching endings and other things I need a guide for?
-How much fanservice is there? (Asking from pro-fanservice angle)
-Does it have hard Japanese? (I want to play it in Japanese)
-Does it really have "fourth-wall-breaking, trope-demolishing dialogue" as the Steam description says? (Asking from angle where I would find that potentially cringe)
-Is the experience gimped by not getting certain game industry references, etc etc?
-How do the following entries compare to the first game?
-Other things that I should know?

Despite this board being dead, i'm in the mood to vent about my current playthrough, so i'm answering this anyway.

>-Is the gameplay engaging and challenging?
Pretty even. I often do quests or grind for plans in between multiple cutscenes.
>-Are there branching endings and other things I need a guide for?
There's a share mechanic that you need to manipulate for some resources can lead to two different endings afaik.
>-Is the gameplay engaging and challenging?
It's so so. Combat can be tactical and positioning is very important, still most of it boils down to spamming attacks on tanky bosses.
>-How much fanservice is there? (Asking from pro-fanservice angle)
What you see is what you get. The designs are sexy and there is lots of innuendo, no out there CGs as of yet.
>-Does it really have "fourth-wall-breaking, trope-demolishing dialogue" as the Steam description says? (Asking from angle where I would find that potentially cringe)
I'd say it's more chuuni than 4th wall breaking. It's self-deprecating cringe.
>-Is the experience gimped by not getting certain game industry references, etc etc?
Sometimes, but how could you not know petit charat from the hit franchise digi charat?

I'm at the fourth chapter and while determined to finish the game, the experience is starting to wear down a little. Reusing the same mountain and factory environment has become nauseating and enemies are just to damn big, i can barely maneuver around them. The story is still cute though.

I haven't played the game yet. But I actually happened to get a PS3 (aside from the Vita), so I wonder whether I should play the original games or Re;Birth. I have heard that the gameplay, particularly the battles, were radically changed, but I don't know whether these changes were for the better or not, and whether there were other changes.

Also I was surprised to see a bunch of new posts/threads when checking the board now. Was it because of the 4kids incident?

Haven't played the games for myself, but I have seen people advising that you play the original Neptunia on the PS3 first because of how the character progression there is the basis for everything afterwards (Including the remakes).

I would recommend playing 2010 as well. The story is different enough and the gameplay is quite different. I prefer it to Re;Birth 1 in spite of all its issues. That said though most of the problems I have with it are how it runs on original hardware. The healing system is really only a negative in the very early game too despite the complaints it gets.

Is it, at any point, harder than the 3rd part of Nep VII?

I do not remember, I have not played that part of Victory II since I finished it in '16, sorry man.

I will say I doubt it though, 2010 is not really a hard game, though a few bosses might give you a run for your money. The Clione's are pretty tough but actually having someone get knocked out is not common in my experience. I play on hard since the battles go by quicker.

I don't have much JRPG experience but I think the only hard part of Nep 2010 was making sure Neptune doesn't get knocked out for the true ending.

Yeah some fights do surprise you when it comes to that. Honestly would have preferred the game to be harder in general rather than getting a surprise hard fight.
