It's supposed to, yeah. It gets obscured a lot nowadays by that way of framing it as a sales pitch on how to get to Heaven, but it isn't a religion where the Creator of the universe just came to earth, did some stuff, died, and then spiritually went back up into the clouds so you too can go there if you believe He exists. He took on human flesh, conquered death through death, and was bodily resurrected. The entire point is that even in the here and now, the physical world and the human body can hold the divine, be rejoined to and participate in His life, and be transformed. This comes through a lot more strongly in parts of Catholicism and Oriental Orthodoxy, although it's present to varying degrees in different branches of Protestantism, and really strongly in Eastern Orthodoxy.
If it helps, IIRC at the time of Christ a gospel (evangelion in Koine Greek) was not simply "good news," but a genre of declaration which announced the coming of a political or military leader. You'd hear who he was, what he had achieved, how he had defeated his foes, and how you were to prepare for him and life under him. No herald would walk up to you and ask you, "Do you have a moment to talk about what Augustus Caesar can do for your life?" No. The divine emperor was coming. The herald wasn't selling Augustus to you: he was warning you to be ready for him.

Way deeper than just that. To give a late anime spoiler (don't hover over this if you don't want a major part of the last few episodes spoiled), it portrays trannies as the fucked-up, dysfunctional endpoint of scientism's occult project to forcibly reshape human destiny and the world to man's whims. The antagonist which creates the trannies turns their inherent insanity against the outside world, and uses them as shock troops to destabilize it. It's trying to tell trannies "YWNBAW and never will be no matter how many procedures you get" with the most fittingly schizo deep cut it can muster, yet I still sometimes find retards looking at it and saying "wow, this show has gender dysophoria, it must be affirming my trans identity."
I'm not exaggerating about the above. Escaflowne is...something. Somebody on the staff evidently took Shoji Kawamori's assignment of "alright, I already did mecha and pop songs in Macross, so let's do mecha and divination" way more seriously than he had to. On every level beyond the love triangle and fantasy party journey, the plot will make you sound like a schizo if you try to talk about it, or even if you just name the antagonist and describe what he does. Even without spoiling the show, it's shoujo fantasy mecha set on a second moon hallucinated into existence by the dying dreams of Atlantis (which the show seems to imply were nephilim). And boy, does it ever go places with that.
